Aso Nakadake is still an active volcano. When volcanic activity is quiet you can go near that crater. It is a rare place in the world.

Aso Shrine is an ancient shrine with a history of more than 2000 years, including Takeiwa tatsumino-mikoto, the grandson of Emperor Jinmu, and 12 family gods. Since ancient times, it has been admired as the best shrine in Higo, combining with the volcanic belief of Mt. Aso crater.
