Located in the Kyushu Mountains at the northern end of Kumamoto Prefecture in central Kyushu. The east, north, and west of the town area borders Oita Prefecture. About 80% of the town area is mountain forest, and about 75% of the forest is cedar artificial forest.

There are two shrines, Takahashi's palace and Hinomiya, which pioneered OGUNI. The Gion Festival is held in July, and the Autumn Festival that lasts over 250 years in October.
