This site offers a northern view of one of the world's largest calderas, measuring 18 km east-west and 25 km north-south. It was created by a series of eruptions that took place between 270,000 and 90,000 years ago, covering northern Kyushu in pyroclastic flow deposits. The deposits that escaped erosion over the millennia today total approximately 175 cubic meters. From : http://www.aso-geopark.jp/en/geosites/geosite01.html
